Algorithms impact on nearly everything we do online and with digital devices. For example, they filter information on our social media or news feeds. Furthermore, they impact on e.g., the search engine results we see, on music we get recommended on streaming platforms, on the selection of dating partners we get matched with, on the prices we pay for products in online stores, or if we are classified as credit-worthy by companies and institutions. Because of the increasing relevance of algorithmic tools and algorithm decision-making in our everyday life, it is crucial to understand algorithms, how they are shaped, and which issues and challenges might arise in their use and implementation. Therefore, in this course, we will unpack the multifaceted roles and power of algorithms in society and issues of e.g. biases and justice. Moreover, we will complement these insights and shed light on what people know about algorithms and how they make sense of algorithms at work. To this end, we will map studies on algorithmic literacies and imaginaries of citizens. By the end of this course, you will be aware of key concepts related to (1) algorithms and algorithmic power as well as (2) algorithmic knowledge and algorithmic literacy. As such, you will have the skills to assess what algorithms are and which critical aspects are worth considering when discussing about the role of algorithms and algorithmic decision-making in our society and our everyday life. Moreover, you will have the skills to critically reflect on dimensions of algorithmic literacy which is often deemed a key competence to navigate digital worlds and a crucial aspect to fight future digital divides.

During the second part, participants program a simple machine learning model step by step in Python and try to "teach" something to the machine. We conclude by discussing the limitations of this technique.
Instructor:
Cristiano Colangelo:

The second part is more practical and focuses on using LaTeX on Overleaf. Finally, we will learn how to export our first document.
Instructor:
Alberto Movia:
I use LaTeX for writing my papers on Philosophy, and I genuinely believe it represents one of the best tools available to students and researchers in the academic world. A lot of people tend to prefer Microsoft Word, mainly because it is perceived to be more "user-friendly", but LaTeX offers the better and more powerful solution in the long run.

From millions of people marching in the streets to the US president losing access to his Twitter profile, social media platforms now hold enough power to shape how we interact with reality. Digital political communication holds a code that we analyze during this course: decoding and getting accustomed to a whole new language is important when critically interpreting our news diet. The key points of this course focus on topics such as fake news, online political communication, personal advocacy, and the governmental approach to leaks of information as well as on basic research techniques for facts checking.

Algorithms
impact on nearly everything we do online and with digital devices. For example,
they filter information on our social media or news feeds. Furthermore, they
impact on e.g., the search engine results we see, on music we get recommended
on streaming platforms, on the selection of dating partners we get matched
with, on the prices we pay for products in online stores, or if we are
classified as credit-worthy by companies and institutions. Because of the
increasing relevance of algorithmic tools and algorithm decision-making in our
everyday life, it is crucial to understand algorithms, how they are shaped, and
which issues and challenges might arise in their use and implementation.
Therefore, in this course, we will unpack the multifaceted roles and power of
algorithms in society and issues of e.g. biases and justice. Moreover, we will
complement these insights and shed light on what people know about algorithms
and how they make sense of algorithms at work. To this end, we will map studies
on algorithmic literacies and imaginaries of citizens. By the end of this
course, you will be aware of key concepts related to (1) algorithms and
algorithmic power as well as (2) algorithmic knowledge and algorithmic
literacy. As such, you will have the skills to assess what algorithms are and
which critical aspects are worth considering when discussing about the role of
algorithms and algorithmic decision-making in our society and our everyday
life. Moreover, you will have the skills to critically reflect on dimensions of
algorithmic literacy which is often deemed a key competence to navigate digital
worlds and a crucial aspect to fight future digital divides.

Algorithms
impact on nearly everything we do online and with digital devices.

R is a statistical programming language that allows the user to analyze data in an efficient and fast way. This module uses R for the statistical analysis of prices and returns of different stocks. In the end, we will learn how to calculate regressions with data obtained from Yahoo Finance.
This course requires a laptop with R and Rstudio installed; both are open source programs. We are happy to help with the installation beforehand upon request.
Instructors:
Andreas Passano & Gaia Zanellini:
During our studies at USI we were able to develop very broad knowledge in R obtaining excellent results in practice and applications. We use R for many personal projects and his knowledge enriches the curriculum a lot. We want to teach this module as we like the teaching environment.

The course is structured in three parts: the first part consists in learning what LaTeX is and an introduction to the Overleaf platform, as well as understanding why it represents a valuable tool for composing scientific documents.

In this course, participants learn the basics of Machine Learning and its main concepts. The first part, covers various surprising applications in the real world. During the second part, participants program a simple machine learning model step by step in Python and try to "teach" something to the machine. We conclude by discussing the limitations of this technique.
Instructor:
Cristiano Colangelo:
During my Bachelor studies, I have attended a specialization in Data Science which allowed me to learn the importance of the machine learning tool. Therefore, I want to share what Machine Learning is and to explain how to use it, especially in this historical moment in which we often hear about artificial intelligence and Machine Learning.
